THE largest ever survey of lakes in the far north shows that most have suffered dramatic ecological changes in the past 150 years. The researchers say climate change is to blame. John Smol of Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, analysed fossilised communities of microscopic organisms in sediment cores from 45 lakes across the Arctic – including Finnish Lapland, Siberia, Svalbard, northern Labrador and northern Quebec. While sediments laid down over the millennia before around 1850 show little change in the abundance of different species, after this date two-thirds of the lakes experienced striking “regime shifts”,
